In light of the horrific environmental damage that will surely impact the Gulf Coast due to the BP oil spill, I thought I would share some thoughts on using this disaster in the classroom. Unfortunately I think we will still be hashing out the impact of BP’s spill during August and beyond. The opportunity that teachers have in this disaster is to provide a background and some understanding of humans’ impact on the environment in which we live. This would fall right in line with the aptitude of Meaning that Dan Pink discusses in A Whole New Mind. To start with, I would address a bit if history. We could begin with Teddy Roosevelt’s preservation efforts during the Progressive Era of U.S. history. President Roosevelt was a vivid outdoorsman, and he had a personal passion for preserving our nation’s natural resources for future generations. The Theodore Roosevelt Association has an excellent lesson plan on their site that provides a background into Roosevelt’s legacy of conservation. You could start this lesson by having students locate the Breton National Wildlife Refuge on a map. Be sure to mention that this preserve is over 100 years old. It was the second nature preserve [...]

The collection spans political, presidential, and cultural episodes in our history, and highlights the men and women who gave a voice to those events. John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama, Martin Luther King, Lou Gehrig, and Nelson Mandella are just a sampling of these incredible speakers. Check it out. I would love to hear your thoughts. Which presidential speech do you think is the most meaningful? Which speech in society and culture did you find most moving? 50 Incredible, Historical Speeches You Should Watch Online | Online Universities.

This is a great example of Daniel Pink’s aptitude of Meaning from A Whole New Mind. Students in Guatemala collected plastic water bottles and built themselves a new school. The project was was initiated by Laura Kutner, a Peace Corps volunteer. Bottles were collected, stuffed with plastic bags for reinforcement, and then made into “bricks” by using chicken wire. A thin layer of cement was applied over the exterior and then painted. (photos) With all of the doom and gloom facing school financing, it was uplifting to see a creative solution that addressed financial shortfalls and the quality of life. Students got a new school for a fraction of the cost, and their village was cleared of trash. Plus, students did so well at collecting bottles that they had to visit neighboring villages in order to gather enough material to finish. Even though I may never be able to put together a project of such magnitude, it made me think of the power of school-wide service projects. Any time learning can include meaning, students are motivated and teachers get an extra “feel good” moment. What else could you ask for? An incredible project that’s definitely worth the time to read [...]

I was asked once by a colleague to relate Dan Pink’s Right-Brain aptitudes to Bloom’s taxonomy. To be honest I have always preferred to apply Bloom’s Taxonomy through the verbs that are usually associated with his work. My colleague and I threw out as many verbs as we could remember, and I wrote them on a whiteboard, categorizing them within the six AWNM aptitudes. Our list was very basic, but we launched a great discussion about higher level thinking skills and Daniel Pink’s Right-Brain skills. I would like to offer a version of that discussion here. I took some time to recreate my previous conversation and wrote down a number of verbs from Bloom’s Taxonomy. There were many verbs that could fit within multiple aptitudes, and my categorization is just one person’s opinion. (The Chart) But as I struggled to find the “perfect” category for each of Bloom’s verbs, I reflected on a statement by Dan Pink that I read in an interview with him. To summarize, Dan Pink stated that it is essential to develop all of the aptitudes in an effort to stimulate the full creativity offered by our “Right-Brain” skills. Furthermore, the six aptitudes are interconnected and [...]

It looks like this Chicago school is going to implement quite a few of Dan Pink’s right-brain aptitudes, even though they did not call them by name. The article highlights a school that is implementing a new curriculum supported by Partnership for 21st Century Skills. They will move to a collaborative, inquiry-based learning model with real world applications. Empathy, design, symphony, and meaning. And that’s just from A Whole New Mind. But let’s add some elements from Dan’s new book, Drive. As the article highlights the move from teacher-led instruction to student-based projects, it seems they are allowing autonomy to flourish. And by focusing on real-world applications, purpose becomes apparent. I will assume that students will also experience mastery as they continue to focus on their individual interests. As you read through the article, it is interesting to see the full-scale implementation of 21st Century Skills, and of course the ideas of Dan Pink. But I continued to reflect on how I could adopt some of these practices into my traditional classroom. Could I provide students more autonomy? Am I keeping their sense of purpose alive? What about meaning and empathy? There are any number of small upgrades that can [...]

This article from the St. Petersburg times really highlights Dan Pink’s meaning and purpose. Students take the sign language that they learn in the classroom and create videos for deaf patrons of theme parks. So not only are students motivated by having a purpose in their studies, but they are also developing the right brain aptitude of meaning. They are helping others and learning some irreplaceable life lessons. What a great way to prepare students for a fulfilling life.
What an interesting application of Dan Pink’s ideas from A Whole New Mind. Chris Livaccari outlines how to apply Dan Pink’s ideas in a Chinese language classroom. Although I have always held the flexibility of Dan Pink’s ideas in the highest regard, I never could have imagined applying them in a Chinese language class. If you would like to get straight to the details of Dan Pink, scroll down to the heading entitled “A Whole New Mind.” There you will see how this teacher specifically applies Dan Pink’s six aptitudes to her language course. What a great, engaging application of AWNM. Every time I read a teacher’s application of right-brain skills, I learn something new. I hope you take the time to get some ideas from this article.
As I spend half of my day at a high school technical center, I am always looking for examples of using focused learning to enhance Meaning in a student’s education. As I have mentioned before, one way I like to think of Dan Pink’s Meaning aptitude from A Whole New Mind is how I can create a meaningful experience for my students’ education. How can I take their experience in the classroom and provide a purpose beyond themselves? This article talks about a growing movement in education that connects academic learning to larger concepts outside of the classroom walls. The specific method in this article is the offering of “pathways” program which will allow students to focus their learning and to receive college credit. But this Aurora school district is contemplating stepping things up by requiring that students complete advanced placement or concurrent enrollment programs in order to graduate. The technical center where I teach offers a large variety of college credit opportunities for students, and I can say that it is extremely successful. Students seem to see a purpose in their studies. They can see the meaning in what they are doing. And I can also attest to the [...]

This article was passed along to me, and I just found it amazing. A Canadian high school student used his science fair project to solve a major ecological problem, the biodegrading of plastic. Obviously this student has been developing the aptitude of Meaning from A Whole New Mind. He took an academic assignment and turned it into a practical step in solving a world-wide crisis. On a much smaller scale, I have used Meaning in my class projects. I try to have students look at a specific problem in the world. For instance, this past week we looked at poverty. The project was set up as a simulation. Students were to act as ambassadors from a chosen country, and compete for $50 million in United Nations funding. Students began by researching poverty in a country of their choosing. They looked at specific systemic causes of poverty and researched current programs that were in place to address the poverty of a nation. As an example, a student researched war-torn Uganda and presented a background on the crippling poverty that has hobbled that nation. She then found the “Invisible Children” program and suggested that the UN award be used to expand that [...]

So I don’t know if you’re a fan of the band OK Go (remember the treadmill guys?), but I want you to bear with me. This video was e-mailed to me by a friend, as she knows I am a fan and also a teacher. It is only three minutes long, but definitely worth the time. As you watch, pay special attention to the implements used throughout. The project was made possible by a group called “Trash for Teaching”. They basically take old old, discarded material and make it available for schools. They have an associated curriculum that focuses on fostering kids’ creativity while teaching them about being responsible for the environment. They discuss where the materials came from and the impact of leftovers. See their website for more info and another introductory video that is definitely worth your three minutes of time. It made me think of Meaning from AWNM. Dan Pink states that people need to be able to create a sense of purpose larger than oneself. After watching the Trash for Teaching video, the larger meaning of our actions as a society started to come into focus for me.
