There’s no better example of story, empathy, and meaning than in a great speech. You’ll have to forgive my inner history geek here, but this collection is a truly amazing insight into human history. The collection spans political, presidential, and cultural episodes in our history, and highlights the men and women who gave a voice to those events. John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama, Martin Luther King, Lou Gehrig, and Nelson Mandella are just a sampling of these incredible speakers. Check it out. I would love to hear your thoughts. Which presidential speech do you think is the most meaningful? Which speech in society and culture did you find most moving? 50 Incredible, Historical Speeches You Should Watch Online | Online Universities.

This is a great site for resources on Robert Marzano’s instructional strategies. If you are familiar with Marzano, then you will find this site particularly interesting as it connects instructional technology resources with each of his strategies. If you are not familiar with Marzano, each strategy is briefly defined so that you can implement the technology while knowing which instructional strategy you are using. I also sorted out a few of Marzano’s strategies and applied them to Dan Pink’s aptitudes from A Whole New Mind. Here are a few of the obvious connections that I made after reviewing the strategies on the Marzano website: #3 Complex Cognitive Tasks (Symphony) #4 Cooperative Learning (Empathy) #8 Graphic Organizers, #12 Non-linguistic Representations (Design) #11 Interactive Games, #12 Kinesthetic Activities (Play) #19 Summarizing (Story/Design) I’m sure there are any number of parallels that can be drawn between Marzano and Dan Pink’s aptitudes, but I thought these were the easiest to implement. So if your district is asking you to utilize the Marzano startegies, don’t worry. You can still develop your students’ right-brain aptitudes at the same time!
I recently created a 6 Word Stories Video Template for using six word stories as video summaries. It really does make for a quick and easy upgrade for watching videos. As I have mentioned before, I like to use six word stories to enhance the story aptitude from A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink. I have always struggled to get students to appreciate and understand an entire video. The faithful “video guide” usually results in students only paying attention long enough to write the word in the blank. But when you use 6-word stories, students seem to be a bit more engaged. They have to pay attention to the entire video in order to offer a six word summary. And my experience shows that students really enjoy the challenge of creating their own six word story. They can take away their own meaning from the video, and they can create a phrase that can easily be memorized. I would like to offer a general observation on AWNM and the classroom. When I consciously design lessons around Dan Pink’s aptitudes, I try to “cross over” between the visual and the written. I have students use pictures to summarize words, and [...]

I was asked once by a colleague to relate Dan Pink’s Right-Brain aptitudes to Bloom’s taxonomy. To be honest I have always preferred to apply Bloom’s Taxonomy through the verbs that are usually associated with his work. My colleague and I threw out as many verbs as we could remember, and I wrote them on a whiteboard, categorizing them within the six AWNM aptitudes. Our list was very basic, but we launched a great discussion about higher level thinking skills and Daniel Pink’s Right-Brain skills. I would like to offer a version of that discussion here. I took some time to recreate my previous conversation and wrote down a number of verbs from Bloom’s Taxonomy. There were many verbs that could fit within multiple aptitudes, and my categorization is just one person’s opinion. (The Chart) But as I struggled to find the “perfect” category for each of Bloom’s verbs, I reflected on a statement by Dan Pink that I read in an interview with him. To summarize, Dan Pink stated that it is essential to develop all of the aptitudes in an effort to stimulate the full creativity offered by our “Right-Brain” skills. Furthermore, the six aptitudes are interconnected and [...]

I’ve been promising that I would post this Story Board Template that I shared at TechNet. For those of you who have not used Dan Pink’s Story in your classrooms, the template should give you an easy way to start. In my history classes, I have students create a fictional history story using the story board. After we have covered a specific period of history, I ask students to create a story board that utilizes the concepts that we have covered. There are two pieces of advice that I have for you: 1. If you have students draw out different portions of your subject prior to the story board, it will help them set up their “shots” on the template. In my case I have students draw out each section of our textbook as we cover them. Students do a graphic organizer over a section, then I take them to some windows and have them use dry erase markers to draw out the major concepts of that section. 2. You might want to cover the main components of a typical Hero Story before you have them begin. The components that I use are Departure, Initiation, and Return. The hero departs [...]

As a lover of the arts, this article really struck home for me. I immediately thought of Dan Pink, and the aptitudes of Story and Symphony. What is opera but a human story? Most of our great and wonderful story lines can be found in opera. And if you can include all of the actions, lyrics, and music you will develop Symphony. But what better use of Meaning that to provide a colorful, intense framework for educating young people. Music is impacting, and the more you know about the piece, the more you can derive its meaning and realize that is is something larger than yourself. A straight definition of meaning from A Whole New Mind. But in the article, teacher Mary Ruth McGinn speaks of empathy. Kids putting their arms around each other after the performance. They created understanding of each other that would not be possible but for the arts. A great idea, and a motivation for all of us. Whatever Happened To … opera in elementary school? – washingtonpost.com.

Update: Check out this post for my latest Avatar lesson plan While I was preparing for a presentation over Dan Pink for a regional technology conference, I ran across this amazing article in Newsweek entitled “It’s the Story, Stupid.” I do not think I could have made up better evidence of Dan Pink’s Story aptitude from A Whole New Mind. You really should read the entire article, as it vividly shines a light on technology and the use of story. But I would like for you to try something. In the article, James Cameron discusses the original trailer for Avatar, which featured the amazing technology of the movie. But the audience response was flat. He then points out that the studio revamped the trailer and focused on the actual story. Audience response went through the roof. I plan on using this example at the conference and wanted to share it on the site. It really is interesting. Watch the first trailer, then read Cameron’s quote. Then take the time to watch the revamped trailer. The conclusion is obvious: Story matters! Original Avatar Trailer “…we put out a teaser trailer that was all about the imagery, and people were less than [...]

What a great application of an old storytelling idea. Collaborative storytelling with Twitter. I think this ideas covers Story, Empathy, and Symphony from Dan Pink’s AWNM aptitudes. I really am chasing the idea of using the back channel in the classroom. With the disaggregation of information through handheld devices and social networking, the challenge of creating a unified message that utilizes the full spectrum of technologies and human capacity is too exciting to let pass. In other words: We have a great opportunity to appeal to our kids with the technology they love. And we are truly powerless to stop the tide of technology, so we had better figure out how to prepare our students to succeed with it!
This strategy was introduced to us by a Special Education teacher in one of my Lesson Upgrades classes. This teacher had learned of this technique through some professional development sponsored by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. The class agreed that this was an excellent tool for developing the Story aptitude from A Whole New Mind. When Daniel Pink mentions Story, he says that it is intrinsic to human nature, and that people who can relay their ideas through stories will be more successful in the future. The LINCS strategy focuses on retention for vocabulary, complete with “connecting stories” and pictures. I think this is a powerful, easy-to-implement technique that could upgrade any lesson plan. What teacher doesn’t have note cards in their class room? And if you take just a small portion of your class time, you will be able to not only enhance your students’ retention, but also their ability to create stories, which will provide them with tools for the 21st Century. And, if you are feeling “techy”, this same ideas could be used in any number of online formats as well. I have included the brief overview of the technique that was shared [...]
