I think that Pixar’s shorts offers us a wonderful insight into Daniel Pink’s Story aptitude.
One of the most amazing things about the Story aptitude from A Whole New Mind is the skill of relaying large amounts of information in a small amount of space. Use of symbols is an integral part of the short story form. If students can master a subject well enough to use symbols, then they truly have an in-depth understanding of the subject.
Pixar’s shorts relay powerful, meaningful messages within five minutes. Imagine if your students could relay the science behind photosynthesis by creating a short story or film. Think of the background knowledge that would be required to explain this complex process in five minutes. What symbols would you need to use? Would you create an animated metaphor? How would your students do it?Share
