This is an interesting way to develop the empathy aptitude from A Whole New Mind,

Students write letters to NFL players.  The purpose is to start a pen pal relationship that is meant to help students appreciate diversity.

As Johanna Giunta, Chapel Trail elementary teacher states “I’ve watched my students grow closer, more tolerant of one another and more interested in learning about and meeting other people.”

Although this program focuses on old-fashioned letter writing, I know that programs such as e-pals utilize the internet to create a pen pal relationship with students from around the world.

I think that a pen pal upgrade can be an effective way to develop empathy.  Some of the high school students in my International Studies program still write to their pen pals that they started corresponding with in middle school.  These students have a head start in appreciating cultural values.

Adding a pen pal program into your lesson plans will help our students navigate their interconnected world.
